Mamakari literally means to “borrow rice from neighbors.” However, in olden days people used to say that they needed to ask their neighbors for rice because the Mamakari dish was so good that they couldn’t make enough of it with the rice they had alone, and that they needed get rice from neighbors to satisfy their appetite.
