Kojima: Birthplace of Japanese Jeans
Kojima in Kurashiki City has thrived as a town of textiles since the old days. Recently, it has become known as a jeans & uniform production area, especially regarding jeans. Kojima has become extremely famous as the birthplace of Japanese jeans. Today, there are many jeans companies in Kojima.
Jeans produced in Kojima go through a complete process, starting with the dyeing of materials, weaving, sewing, washing and finishing. They receive high recognition, not only in Japan but also in the world.
Jeans Museum


Learn jeans history and observe the production process.
“Betty Smith”, which is a jeans manufacturer, runs the “Jeans Museum”, where both jeans history and their production process are introduced. Antique jeans and old sewing machines are also exhibited. In addition, you may order your own original jeans here. (Reservation required.)

- Rampu-Ya (Kobo Ainozoki,Rampu-Ya, Ajino shop)
- Superb jeans dyed by the old, labor-intensive indigo-dyeing method and woven by hand are produced and sold. You can also experience an indigo-dyeing activity at the workshop. (Reservation required.)

- Mukashi Shimotsui Kaisendonya (A shipping agent)
- The shipping agent building has been restored to its original state (as well as possible). You can “see history” from the building.

- Nozaki House
- Nozaki House is the impressive house of Buzaemon Nozaki. He is called “King of the Salt Farm”. The houses lining this large site are well preserved, and stand as they used to be. Several of them are used as a showroom of the salt manufacturing process.
