The scenery of a castle town, having many samurai residences and commercial houses from old days, provides people with impressions of history and culture. In springtime, there is a festival celebrating girls called “Hinamatsuri”, and in winter, there is a heroic fighting festival.

The Daigo-zakura cherry tree is an enormous tree estimated to be 1000 years old, and its height is 18 meters. It is one of the 100 best trees in Japan.

Kanba-no-taki (waterfall)

This waterfall is ranked as one of best 100 waterfalls in Japan. It is magnificent, and is the largest waterfall in western Japan. It is 110 meters high and 20 meters wide. There are approximately 200 wild monkeys living nearby.

Hiruzen Heights is a vast and beautiful plateau located in the south side of Daisen-Oki National Park. There are many cattle farmers in this area, and the number of their Jersey cattle is amongst the top in Japan. Sweet and rich Jersey milk is utilized to produce dairy food, such as yogurts and cheese.

These are cold mineral springs that gush from the valley in the skirt of Naka-Hiruzen (1,122 m), and from the mountain in the middle of Hiruzen Sanza (three mountains) among Chugoku Mountains.

Cosmos flowers can be seen at various places in the Hokubo area, including the “Cosmos Place” where approximately 10,000 cosmos flowers are planted, and along the “Cosmos Road”, nearly 5km long.

Many fireflies occupy the river basins of the Hokubo area. The best times of year to watch the fireflies are as follows. Japanese Firefly “Luciola cruciata”: late May to mid-June, ''Hotaria parvula'': mid-June to early July.
