Shimotsui Townscape Preservation District

Shimotsui is a port town facing the Seto Inland Sea, and during the Edo period it prospered greatly as a transit trading port for cotton and herring lees carried by Kitamae ships, and as a stop for people visiting Sanuki Konpira across the ocean. Even now, the merchant houses and herring storehouses from that time remain, and the atmosphere of a port town remains.
